Why Vulnerability is the Key to True Strength
We live in a world that often views vulnerability as a weakness. Society encourages us to put on a brave face, hide our flaws, and never show signs of uncertainty or fear. But what if the very thing we see as a weakness is, in fact, the key to unlocking our greatest strength? What if vulnerability is not something to be avoided but embraced?
I want us to explore the power of vulnerability, why it is the key to true strength, and how opening ourselves up can lead to deeper connections, greater personal growth, and a closer relationship with God.
1. The Misconception of Strength
From a young age, we are often taught to associate strength with self-reliance, independence, and control. Strength is seen as the ability to “tough it out” without showing any signs of weakness or emotion. However, this narrow view of strength can be limiting and isolating. When we try to carry the weight of the world on our own, we miss out on the incredible power that comes from being open, honest, and vulnerable.
True strength is not about how much we can handle on our own but how willing we are to admit that we need help, support, and guidance. Vulnerability allows us to acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers and that it’s okay to rely on others—including God.
As I mention in Who Am I?, “I have leaped light years beyond where I started. My goal is that as I unpack my story for you in a very vulnerable way, you will begin to understand that vulnerability is not weakness but immense strength.” Part of my hope in writing the book and sharing my story is that we discover that being open about our struggles is a sign of courage and growth.
2. Vulnerability Strengthens Relationships
One of the most profound ways vulnerability enhances our lives is by strengthening our relationships. When we allow ourselves to be open and honest with others, we invite deeper connections and intimacy into our relationships. Whether it’s with a spouse, a friend, or even in a work environment, vulnerability breaks down barriers and builds trust.
Think about the times when you’ve truly connected with someone on a deep level. It was likely in moments of shared vulnerability—when you opened up about your fears, failures, or insecurities, and the other person responded with empathy and understanding. These are the moments that bond us to others in ways that superficial conversations never could.
Vulnerability allows us to show up authentically, without the masks we often wear to protect ourselves. And in doing so, it empowers others to do the same.
3. Vulnerability as a Path to Growth
Vulnerability is also a pathway to personal growth. When we hide our weaknesses or pretend we have it all together, we limit our ability to learn, grow, and evolve. Growth happens when we step outside of our comfort zones and confront the areas where we struggle. Vulnerability forces us to face our fears, challenge our limiting beliefs, and open ourselves to new possibilities.
It is in moments of vulnerability that we learn the most about ourselves—our strengths, our weaknesses, and our capacity to overcome challenges. Being vulnerable doesn’t mean we are weak; it means we are brave enough to acknowledge that we are still learning and growing.
4. Vulnerability Before God
Perhaps the most important aspect of vulnerability is how it strengthens our relationship with God. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, the Apostle Paul writes, “But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” This powerful verse reminds us that in our moments of weakness and vulnerability, God’s strength shines through.
When we are honest with God about our struggles, our doubts, and our failures, we open the door for His grace and power to work in our lives. Vulnerability allows us to surrender our need for control and trust that God is working all things for our good. Instead of hiding our weaknesses, we can bring them to God and watch Him turn them into sources of strength and transformation.
5. Practical Steps to Embrace Vulnerability
If embracing vulnerability feels intimidating, you’re not alone. It takes time, courage, and practice to allow yourself to be open. Here are some practical steps to help you start embracing vulnerability in your life:
Be Honest with Yourself: The first step to vulnerability is being honest about your feelings, fears, and struggles. Take time to reflect on areas where you might be holding back or pretending to be stronger than you feel.
Start Small: You don’t have to open up about everything all at once. Start by being vulnerable in small ways, such as sharing a challenge you’re facing with a trusted friend or family member.
Allow for Imperfection: Vulnerability means accepting that we are imperfect. It’s okay to make mistakes and not have it all together. Give yourself permission to be human. God doesn't expect perfection but progression. When you stumble, and we all do, then repent and make the adjustments necessary to move forward.
Seek Safe Spaces: Find people who will respond to your vulnerability with empathy, love, and support. This could be close friends, family, a mentor, or a small group at church.
Pray for Courage: Ask God to help you embrace vulnerability and trust in His strength. Pray for the courage to open up about your struggles and to lean on His grace when you feel weak.
Vulnerability is not a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of true strength. It allows us to connect with others on a deeper level, grow in our personal lives, and strengthen our relationship with God. By embracing vulnerability, we unlock the power of authenticity and the courage to face life’s challenges with grace and resilience.
My Challenge to You:
Take a step today toward vulnerability. Reflect on an area of your life where you’ve been holding back and share it with someone you trust. How has vulnerability helped you grow in your relationships and faith?
